Epic Browser! It’s highly unlikely that you haven’t heard the name before. The hype surrounding it has been huge with some even calling it the ‘national browser’! Well, there still might be some lost souls who don’t know what I am talking about. So here is a brief introduction
Epic browser is the first ever web browser customized for India and is built by a Bengaluru ( though Bangalore sounded much better. Don’t you think? but ….. ) based company called Hidden Reflex.
Its built on the Open source Mozilla Firefox platform so its not something new and its easier to switch coz all your favorite apps/ extensions will still work.
So, why a new browser? The competition is so intense already, then why a new entrant? Simple. The goal of the product is to create a browser which is uniquely Indian and appeals to the general Indian audience. And Epic does the job very well.
I have been running Epic for two days now ( that’s also why I am writing this late ) and I must say I am impressed. Its built on firefox so everything that is good about firefox is available here too. But along with the goodies comes an interface that has an Indian feel all over it. With India specific links on the side to a huge collection of India specific themes, this browser has it all to make you feel patriotic everyday. Another cool thing is easy to reach social networking buttons which also includes orkut (obviously, its for Indians!..:) ). It comes with a few bundled apps too like WOT and a word processor. All inside the browser.
To top it up, it has some innovative features which take it a notch above other ‘global’ browsers like a build in antivirus which monitors all your online activity and what’s more, it can even can your computer for free.
Now, this is amazing considering most of us don’t like to pay for expensive antivirus softwares.
In short, You should use Epic. Not just coz its Indian but coz its good.
But for me, Epic is not just a great product. It’s a proof of the entrepreneurial and innovation revolution that is emerging right now. For long, India was a land of outsourcing for cheap processes. Our IT machinery was designed to supply to the demands of the West. But the west only outsourced the low processes coz the west was where the real talent that was required to do the high skilled work resided.
But that is all changing. India is no longer the world’s back office. Innovation is no longer a taboo. Slowly but surely, there is a new wave of Indian entrepreneurs arriving on the scene and introducing innovative products and ideas. A case in point is Infibeam.
This is great news for us Indians. Who knows, may be in the future we may not have to look up to the silicon valley to drive innovation in the tech world. It might be happening right here in the world’s back office!
But there is still a lot that has to be done. Most of the innovation are tech centric. That is not a good thing. India can lead the world only if it becomes the place everyone looks up to and for that the innovation culture has to spread to other spheres too. I don’t just want India to be making awesome software, I want Indian to be setting new benchmarks in other fields like Sociology or may be proposing new theorems in mathematics or discovering new things in sociology. I think you get the point. Innovation should not be just one sector’s monopoly.
But I am as hopeful as ever that this will happen. We shall cross the hurdles that the corrupt system presents to us and make a mark in the world.
God Willing. One day, India will be a driver of innovation. One day.
