Is Delhi ashamed of itself? CWG 2010. It’s kinda fishy

What is more important; what are you in your own eyes or how the world looks at you? I agree that both are important but what’s MORE important. I believe that it is how YOU look at yourself that matters more. But how does Delhi look at itself? A city of the new millennia or the city of slums. I dunno. I would like to believe that my city is optimistic and that it’s the next big thing but somehow, something doesn’t seem right with the way Delhi is changing itself; especially for the CWG 2010.

Why are we ‘giving back’ beggars to UP and Bihar? Why are we rebuilding the roads only around the games venue? Why are only the markets close to the games venues being revamped? Or why are only the roads to be used by the athletes get streetscaped?

Don’t get me wrong. I am not against improving the city. But my question is, who is this development for? The developments are plastic and mainly only for a small section of Delhi and that too at the cost of the other section. For instance, There were power cuts in Delhi in Delhi in peak summer, and not coz there was shortage of power.

Did we elect this government to create an illusion of progress in front of the international media?

I want development but for other parts of Delhi too. Why is Delhi focusing on the 20 day event as if it’s the end of the world. It is not. Delhites will live in the same city even after the games; then why not develop the city instead of developing just the venues. And perhaps the common people will live in a situation which is worse only coz their government believed that foreign athletes were more important than its own citizens.

I agree that the games venues will be like a boon for the sports enthusiasts after the games are over coz we will get to play in them. But at what cost? We don’t even get a regular supply of water and electricity. Shouldn’t the government be solving that first? Or at least try to.

The kind of preparations that are going on make me believe that Delhi is not proud of itself and so its trying to revamp its main location that foreign visitors are likely to visit. And this kind of behavior defeats the logic of democracy. Shouldn’t a politician listen to his voter base so that he can retain his votes and his seat. But in Delhi, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

A statement given by the Delhi government sometime back (when the Union Budget was getting prepared and they were asking the center for a money for the games) exemplifies the case; “If we do not get central funding we will pour all the funds that we have into the games preparations. The rest of Delhi will suffer”

Who would do that? What has gone wrong with our ever so cunning politicians. Don’t they want their seats again? Why are they dumb enough to neglect their people at the cost of some British legacy Games.

Or is the joke on us? Coz, We, the People don’t know how to make our vote count.

Very true Aditya. Everytime some international event happens (thought there are very less but events as visits of US President can also be considered in the same category) this is the same case. all the developments on the roads and areas where the foreigners are expected to visit. This is because if that time anything goes wrong then the official in charge would be hanged by his bosses. But who cares of the complaints made by Indians themselves. Nobody is going to hang the same officer inc charge for it if the complaint comes from locals. Pity!!

We have a habit of Shoe-offs. It can be seen everywhere in our lives. But, as far as the civic responsibilities are concerned this habit will have a devastating effect for sure.

Absolutely right .Change should be for the benefit of all sections of society.Yes the commonwealth games are a very important international event but that does not mean we change our cities just to show that we are a great and prosperous country.A country is considered prosperous as long as the people are happy but the construction is not only creating discomfort for the people of Delhi but also leading to displacement of the poor and the needy who have no homes. We should realize that by doing this we are only creating a false sense of grandeur and achievement by portraying ourselves as something which we are not .
